Safe Used Pads Disposal for Environment Protection (SUPDEP)
Reuse, Recycle and Reduce Waste for a Better Future
Many menstrual hygiene products are non-biodegradable, posing environmental risks. Communities often lack knowledge and facilities for safe disposal, leading to improper waste management methods such as open burning, which releases harmful toxins. Women and girls also face challenges in accessing affordable products, sanitation facilities, and disposal options.
The Safe Used Pads Disposal for Environment Protection (SUPDEP) initiative addresses these issues by working with households and market leaders to develop sustainable, locally owned menstrual waste management solutions. CACASS has developed MobIn, a mobile, energy-efficient incinerator for the safe disposal of sanitary products and other waste.
Supported by USAID’s Western Kenya Sanitation Project (WKSP), SUPDEP aims to create a financially sustainable and replicable sanitation marketplace. With partner support, MobIn offers a climate-friendly alternative to traditional disposal methods, reducing environmental harm.
